Work Screen Based 99

In 2005, I was artist in residence on a Russian Icebreaker in the Arctic Ocean. Since my return I have experimented with time-lapse film and melting ice in various forms. I found it difficult to create work that could even begin to communicate the scale, power and enormity of the Arctic. So I zoomed in and looked at ice on a domestic scale.

99 was selected for Portobello's Garden Gallery event in 2008. How many of us have memories of hurriedly gobbling a melting ice cream on a hot summer's day by the sea? The work is intended to turn something domestic and intimate into a brief tragicomic meditation on human appetite, loss and altering states.
