I originally trained as a biologist and worked as a physiological monitoring technician in an open-heart surgery unit before making the switch from science to art. I studied drawing and painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee. On graduating in 1992 I was awarded a travelling scholarship from the Royal Scottish Academy that enabled me to live and work in Florence, Italy for a year.
Since returning to Scotland I have won several awards and prizes for my work including a month long residency aboard a Russian icebreaker in the Arctic Ocean. I work in a broad range of media—encompassing drawing, lens-based and print—and have exhibited both in the UK and internationally, with work held in a number of public and private collections.
As an arts educator I have devised and facilitated creative workshops for various clients including Artlink, the National Galleries of Scotland and the University of the Arts, London. In April 2016 I was an invited speaker at the School of Arts and Media, Teeside University. Alongside occasional freelance education work and my ongoing studio practice I currently work at Edinburgh College of Art providing technical support and instruction in a variety of print media and workshop activities.
During my career to date I have had the good luck and pleasure to work with a range of inspiring people including healthcare professionals, a theatre group, an arctic explorer, a geologist, a poet and a moth expert, to name just a few. I generally enjoy collaborative ventures and the unexpected directions that can result from such projects.
